Korean Blanket for Winter - Microfibre Blankets

What is Microfibre?

Microfibre is one of the most commonly used materials in modern Korean bedding for winter, mostly in the forms of winter blankets, comforters and plush bedding.

According to the Wikipedia, Microfibre is..

Microfibre is a synthetic fibre made of threads finer than on denier or one detex with a diameter of less than ten micrometers.  (Microfibre in Wikipedia)

Microfibre is a high-density fabric made from fine threads less than 1/100th the thickness of a human hair.

How it is processed?

It is produced by blending polyester and nylon in a 7:3 ratio, spinning it into ultra-fine threads, and splitting each thread into 8 strands.

Features of Microfibre

  • Absorption : Absorbency is 2 to 5 times higher than cotton. Hence, it is widely used for towels, tablecloths, glass cloths and cleaning cloths.
  • Hygienic & Anti-Allergy : It naturally prevents dust mites, bacteria with its tight woven structure.
  • Low Static : It is less prone to static buildup, offering a smoother and more comfortable touch.
  • Applications : It is often used like a fleece, mink fabrics for extra softness and warmth

Microfibre for Korean Bedding

Microfibre has been commonly used to produce Korean blankets, bed toppers, pillowcases, and comforters for decades. Its effectiveness in thermal insulation as a replacement for down in quilt covers and sleeping bags is widely recognised. Therefore, in a country like Korea—where winter temperatures can drop to -10°C to -15°C—microfibre comforters and blankets have long been a winter favourite due to following factors.

Korean Blankets/Comforters that is made of microfibre also doesn't require any quilt covers and they are designed to be machine washable. (Read our blog on Korean blankets that do not need quilt covers)

Soft and Comfortable

One of microfibre's most noticeable qualities is its soft surface. Fibres are very fine and create a smooth texture that feels comfortable, smooth, soft and plush against the skin. This is particularly common in Korean winter blankets.

Lightweight

Microfibre bedding can provide a soft and substantial feel without being extremely heavy. This makes it useful for people who want warm bedding but don't enjoy the weight of very heavy quilts or traditional thick blankets.

Warm and Cosy

Korean blankets/comforters/bedding products made of microfibre are designed to be used during the winter time. They're constructed in a way to feel soft, warm and cosy helping retain heat. Many Korean winter blankets use plush microfibre on one or both sides, sometimes combined with additional filling to ensure it is warm enough to use.
